ABOUT ME

Matt chan

KPA CTP, CAWA

One of the areas I'm needed in most is by people who have previously had a dog or cat before, and have now brought home a new one.

It’s so hard to adjust. You’re going so used to what you know.

How your dog walked, ran, ate, and connected with you.

What they liked to do. What they didn’t like to do.

Who they were. What they meant to you.

And this is when you need to remember patience.

For yourself and your own feelings, and for your new dog.

Often, this happens with a newly-acquired animal soon after we’ve experienced loss of one of our own animals. Or it could be many years later, and hurts just the same.

And we made this decision to go forward and bring a new one home.

And suddenly, they don’t have any of the skills you remember ‘a dog’ having.

They do things that are annoying, hazardous, or seemingly not smart, and it’s not how you remember dealing with ‘a dog’. They don’t connect with you the way you used to connect.

You constantly have to remind yourself: This is not the same dog. It took time to bond with your previous dog, and by Year 12, you don’t ever remember a time of  not being absolute best friends.

You have to give yourself a break, and you have to give your new dog a break. Use one of the utmost greatest strengths in life: patience. It can take months to really start to connect. Give it four months. Becoming best friends can take time.

No one will ever replace anyone in life. Certainly not your soulmate dog.

If we’re lucky, we can add more love to our life. And that’s what you’ve done by making the life-changing choice to bring home a new dog. They’re a different dog.

And this one needs training--as will you!

And so you’ll form a very different relationship. And you’ll form new paths in your brain and in your heart. Right next to all of your cherished, well-worn paths.

And with time, those new ones will fit right in with the original paths.

And you will see, how beautiful.
